What’s a Week Really?

So we were supposed to wait for a week before planting but Harvey couldn’t do it…

We are beginners, so we just picked a few different things we thought we would enjoy in a couple of months (maybe it will take less time since we sped up the planting process!)

I also tackled the front a little today…

Progress

We got the final bale and we are watering away.  We have to put a net over it because of our plethora of rats squirrels and crows.

The Yard

We have had such busy weekends lately that we decided to stay put this weekend and attend to our crazy yard.  Some friends asked us if we wanted to join them camping this weekend.  Um, we’ll camp again, but the thought of doing it again this weekend, four hours from home…makes a girl kinda sick just thinking about it!

Did you guess ‘straw bale’ garden?  You didn’t even guess did you!?  We’re hip!  Harvey came home with a Fine Gardening Magazine (I know, I’m a lucky woman) and said we should try this.  So…we are!

Bummer…we need another bale.  Once we get that, we water it well for a week or so.  Then we simply put soil on top and fill in the hole with soil and plant away.  No weeds!  (Except for the few thousands surrounding the bales)  : )

My big job this morning was to cut this jasmine plant off the structure.  Harvey has hated it since we moved in.  It smells great from about 15 feet away but gets overwhelming if you hang out there.  It was also filled underneath with deadness and two nests, a baseball, and some lovely spiders.  I have to say that Harv was impressed I had the whole thing down and in the garbage cans before he got back from Home Depot.

Now I get to paint it!  I think it needs some fabric…?

Bye little lemon tree!  Poor little guy…just like the rest of the trees it was in the wrong place.  It just didn’t get any sun and it’s in the way for our ‘something better’ that’s coming soon!

So if the two of us can get our aching bodies out of bed tomorrow we have a busy day ahead.

One More Month

We finally got all of our paperwork done and I took it down to the court.  June 22 is the big day to finalize the adoption!  It is so exciting to have a date.  While the monthly reports have been easy to do and I am glad to have that information recorded, I am so happy to be done with it and ready for everything to be official for our family.

I’ll be honest, I was sad when it seemed we were going on our first trip without Hanna.  Much to my relief, just before we got in the car Ryan went to get her (I know, but it’s a her!)  I’m not ready for Ryan to be over Hanna coming on family outings. : )

It wasn’t the easiest, the quietest, or warmest camping trip, but we had a great time and yes, we’ll be heading out again this summer.

The Long and Whiney Night

We had a fun first day.  We got to the park early so we had time to play a little and set up before the other families arrived.  Daddy made us some tri-tip for dinner and it was delicious.  Then, a drip, and another drip,…It started to rain with absolutely no regard for the weather report that did not forecast rain!  We quickly threw things in the car.  It lasted long enough to soak our chairs but was over rather soon.  Harv went to bed early with the boys and I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing conversation around the campfire with our friends.  Despite the relative calmness I knew the dark hours of the night were still ahead (mothers know these things.)

I don’t know what time things began to fall apart but I am guessing around 11 pm.  Erik woke up and started crying.  We would settle him down a bit for a while but he just wouldn’t go to sleep and would start crying all over again.  It was starting to get light and the little birdies were beginning to sing (irritating when you’ve been up all night by the way) when he finally fell asleep.  Harv and I got a couple of hours sleep total.  Ryan of course slept through almost all of Erik’s crying.  As soon as Harv sat up in the morning I said, “Erik is sleeping in his own bed tonight!”  So after dinner he and Erik drove home.   The campers next to our site left after breakfast?!  When Harv and Erik returned in the morning for breakfast they both had huge grins.  Nothing like a warm shower and a good night’s sleep!

Didn’t seem too bothered about keeping his parents and the rest of the campers up most of the night.

We took a really nice walk through the park.  No that’s not Erik in the stroller.  I didn’t even bring the stroller!  Ryan is crazy about our friend’s little boy and pushed him as much as he could.

After we got back from our walk I was ready for a warm shower.  I got the scoop from another camper that the showers were not hot but warm and worth it.  I brought my bag of quarters and headed up.  I peaked in the first shower room and saw that the coin slot was right next to the shower head.  I wouldn’t even have to move to keep the water flowing!  I went ahead and checked out another one just to be sure I was getting the best one.  No good…you had to walk away from the shower head and put the coins in on the wall behind the shower.  So I went back to the first shower.  I got undressed and started to put the coin in when I finally realized that the shower head was about four feet up.    (Yes, I am taller than four feet!)  It was the handicapped shower!  So I started freezing, and now I was totally freezing, but I wasn’t wasting quarters and warm water on 3/4 of an experience.  So I got dressed again, repacked my bag and went back to stall number two.  The shower wasn’t warm…it was HOT and fabulous!  The rain, the crying, the lack of sleep…gone!   New woman…ready to camp!

Ryan’s favorite part of camping!
